Community Cafe Brings Us Together for All the Bite Reasons

We all have our favorite coffee shop, that number one place to grab a craft beer, our go-to stop for a late night bite, and our quick stop for a meal at lunchtime. We also have our vegan friends or our non-vegan friends, our friends who like chicken, but don’t eat pork, and even friends who are vegetarians except for when bacon is an option (bacon should always be an option). Sometimes it is a little tough for everyone to agree on a restaurant to go to as a group. What if I told you that there is a place in Downtown St. Pete that is the perfect meeting location for you and all of your friends? Community Cafe (, located at 2444 Central Avenue, is that place!

Allow me to begin with their delicious menu. Owner, Mandy Keyes, has done a heavenly job of creating healthy and yummy choices. Firstly, most of the sauces and spreads are made in-house to promise the freshest flavor and healthiest options. My personal favorite is Mandy’s Avocado Spread, served with warm pita bread. (It brought my tummy pure joy in the first bite.) If you are vegan, give Annie’s Perfect Pesto a shot. Instead of creating this with pine nuts, Community Cafe uses cashews, which are soaked to create a vegan cream cheese-type base for the pesto. This eliminates the use of Parmesan cheese. (Genius!)

Looking for more than just a snack? Try one of the Community specials, such as Christine’s Chicken Salad Sandwich. It is more than your regular old chicken salad, you will bite down on meaty chunks of chicken and you will be pleasantly surprised with the sweet taste of cranberries, grapes, and apples; all of this on a lightly toasted sourdough bread. (Delicious!)

There are also wraps and paninis to choose from. Tofu may freak some folks out, but Community Cafe is said to have the best tofu in St. Pete. Put your taste buds to the test and see if you agree when you try the Pesto Tofu Panini. They sear the tofu to perfection in order to avoid that mushy texture.

What will you have to drink here? Perhaps a coffee or espresso (yes, they have vegan milk options, too!), or Local Kombucha by Mother Kombucha will be your choice. There are also a plethora of flavored teas, Italian Soda, root and ginger beer, hard cider, craft beer, and even organic wines. No matter what you need to wet your whistle, Community Cafe has all of the options to bring the community, vegans, gluten-free-ers, meat eaters and vegetarians, all together in one big happy family, right here in downtown St. Pete.
